The goal of the thesis is to investigate the role of information processing in complex systems. The way information gets processed in a system is thought to give a clue regarding the complexity of the behaviour exhibited by this system. Extensive use is made of information-theoretic tools, in particular of the Maximum Entropy principle which plays an important role in several cross-disciplinary applications of statistical mechanics.
